Overview
Brunel has an exciting opportunity for a Senior Project Engineering Manager to support our client, a leading global mining company. This role will include time in the engineering offices in Santiago, Chile and at the El Abra site, with an eight-week rotation in Chile and two weeks off. Accommodations and travel are provided. The working week is Monday through Friday.
This role involves day-to-day leadership, management, and direction of both the detail engineering and the engineering execution phases of a major mining and metallurgical process facilities project. The position reports to the Project Director and functionally to the Director of Engineering, covering all aspects of the project life cycle with a specified technology vendor, from early scoping and definition through detailed engineering, procurement, field erection, and commissioning support.
Responsibilities
- Review the development of engineering work packages (EWPs) for all deliverables and time-based functions with the technology provider. Review and analyze project requirements to establish tasks, subtasks, and project timelines.
- Manage scope, cost, schedule, safety, and quality for the project as influenced by the technology package engineering.
- Monitor technical work performance and verify controls for tracking and reporting the advancement of engineering deliverables.
- Interface with site-based leadership, health and safety personnel, and internal teams to ensure work is executed safely and responsibly.
- Participate in design reviews and execution planning discussions to ensure well-conceived schedule development.
- Lead the evaluation, management, and approval of changes to the work proposed by the technology provider, minimizing impacts to cost and schedule.
- Ensure a comprehensive QA / QC program to monitor quality of all engineering tasks and deliverables.
- Monitor ongoing work and completed work to ensure quality and alignment with client and site operations requirements.
- Participate in project engineering meetings (progress reviews, master and look-ahead schedules) and collaborate with the project team, contractors, and site operations to resolve issues and optimize schedule.
- Forecast contractor staffing needs based on actual progress and remaining work, and coordinate scheduling accordingly.
- Develop an achievable engineering schedule to meet project requirements using EWPs.
- Contribute to the monthly project report regarding design progress, cost, and issues, recommending changes as needed to achieve objectives.
- Contribute to the Project Execution Plan (PEP) with the project leadership team and allocate roles and responsibilities.
- Coordinate with Procurement, Construction, and Commissioning early in the design effort to obtain input and conduct reviews.
- Regularly review and adjust the engineering project team structure to meet short- and long-term objectives and implement changes as needed.
- Ensure Engineering Systems and 3D intelligent design environment are properly set up and used.
- Engage specialist expertise as necessary and ensure engineering risk assessments and HAZOPs are carried out with issues addressed.
- Supervise project staff and contractors; act as an expert on engineering management issues.
- Coordinate quality audit verifications to ensure compliance with engineering standards and procedures; initiate corrective actions as required.
Minimum Qualifications
Proven experience in Project and Engineering Management on projects valued over $500 million.Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related field with a minimum of 15 years’ experience in project management practices, systems, processes, and terminology.Master’s degree in engineering or related field with a minimum of 12 years’ experience in project management practices, systems, processes, and terminology.Knowledge of engineering principles, project controls, contract administration, procurement, expediting, and materials management (logistics).Willingness to travel frequently, undertake international assignments, and relocate to the site of work.Proficiency with business software and tools; strong technical knowledge of engineering systems, design, and materials; and familiarity with current engineering technologies.General knowledge of industry standards and regulatory design criteria across engineering disciplines.Ability to plan, coordinate, and organize at an advanced level; strong multi-discipline interdependency understanding.Knowledge of drawing production and document control methodologies; progress assessment and engineering control strategies.Strong communication skills across all levels, including client representatives; ability to manage stakeholder relationships and procurement / contracting, construction, and commissioning methodologies.Ability to lead, motivate, and coach others; capable of solving complex problems with high-level technical detail.Preferred Qualifications
Prior EPCM experience; design office management experience is preferred.Registration as a Professional Engineer with a governing authority.Experience on large industrial projects valued over $1 billion is advantageous.Productivity and performance improvement experience with large workforces; experience with scheduling programs; understanding engineering staffing requirements and forecasting.Experience in setting up KPIs and tracking them day-to-day; ability to work collaboratively with clients, EPs, EPCM and contractors; mining project construction experience.Here at Brunel, we offer a competitive compensation package and world-class training and technology to support your success.
