Think Piece on "Latin America and the Caribbean in a new landscape of geopolitics, globalization, and development"

The consultant will contribute to the work of the Commission on Geopolitics, Globalization and Development for Latin America and the Caribbean (CGGD). The Commission will examine evolving global and regional geopolitics and prepare a report with strategic recommendations for governments in the region and for ECLAC.

This role involves preparing written material aligned with the programme and deliberations of the CGGD, which may be used by the Technical Secretariat as part of preparatory documents for meetings. With the Commissioner’s agreement, material may be shared with other Commissioners.

Work location

The consultant will be based at his / her home address.

5 October – 7 November 2025

Duties and Responsibilities

The United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) provides analysis and recommendations on economic, social and environmental policies to promote inclusive growth, reduce poverty and inequality, and foster sustainable development. ECLAC engages in multilateral dialogue, fosters regional cooperation, and supports policy formulation in open economies. It addresses issues such as climate change, gender equality and the care economy, and the impacts of globalization. The CGGD will :

  • examine global and regional geopolitics and identify opportunities and risks for inclusive and sustainable development
  • form proposals to strengthen intra- and extra-regional cooperation, including through the United Nations and other platforms (e.g., G20, BRICS, ASEAN)
  • develop domestic and regional policy options to capitalize on new geopolitical opportunities while mitigating risks

Qualifications / Special Skills

The candidate must have a PhD and at least 10 years of experience in applied economics or productive policies. Extensive experience in the Chinese economy is required.

Languages

The candidate must be fluent in English.
